Del Mar Real Estate
The small city was founded in the 1880's as a seaside resort for the rich and famous, and continues to attract many of the area's A-list buyers. Del Mar's status as the only town in the nation with a thoroughbred horse racing track also makes it a popular tourism destination, where hundreds of thousands visit each year between July and September for the high profile races. Downtown Del Mar is home to a wide variety of fine shops and restaurants, enjoyed year round by tourists and residents alike.
"Del Mar" is Spanish for "of the sea," and was named by local resident Ella Loop, who owned a beach tent city with her husband. The Loops attracted interest in Del Mar by selling 50 x 140 foot lots during the early 20th century. The city grew rapidly during the late 1920s and finally incorporated as an independent city in 1959.
