Best known for the Point Loma Lighthouse and the nearby tide pools, Point Loma is a seaside community with lots to discover. According to the 2008 census around 50,000 people reside in the community, and it remains one of California's most popular tourist areas. History buffs will appreciate exploring the restored Point Loma Lighthouse, located at the Cabrillo National Monument. The light house was the highest in the world but because it could not be seen by incoming ships in stormy weather, it was replaced by a smaller one. Later, the original light house was fully restored to preserve its history. Residents and visitors flock to Sunset Cliffs, just south of Ocean Beach, where they have a breathtaking view of the sunset or even a gray whale sneak by. As this is a seaside community, the height of the economy comes from deep-sea fishing, retail shops, and military bases.
Point Loma Real Estate Market Trends
Point Loma contains several unique neighborhoods but only some feature housing. The Roseville neighborhood is near the oldest part of the peninsula, and over 100 years ago, fisherman use to fish for tuna there. The area now features smaller single family homes and apartments. Loma Portal consists of historical homes with Spanish or Tudor architecture, perfect for newlywed couples or growing families.
Point Loma includes three other infamous districts. At the very tip on the Point, residents can purchase expensive mansions where they can enjoy the scenic views. Alternatively, the Midway features Kobey's Swap Meet, the largest in the area. This neighborhood features only a few apartment options as it is overrun with shops. Liberty Station used to be the San Diego Naval Training Center and has now been converted into an urban community. Over 350 families live at this community which includes two hotels, shopping malls, restaurants, and over 120 acres of public parks, as well an extensive arts and culture program.
Things To Do In Point Loma
Residents will never tire of things to explore in the area. The tide pools allow visitors to climb rocks and gaze at fish and coral, and it is a safe way to show children fish. In addition, families can explore Shelter Island, where they can take a leisurely boat ride or experience some deep-sea fishing. The area also features some historical exhibits dealing with the military, both at Liberty Station and Point Loma Bunkers.
Point Loma stressed the importance of education and children attend San Diego Unified School District, or there is a local charter school The area also features Point Loma Nazarene University, a Christian college, serving more than 2,000 students.
