Campo is a relatively small yet active community that lies not far from the U.S.-Mexico border in Southeast San Diego County. The area was not settled by the Diegueno Indians, who referred to the area as "Miquatay" or "Big Foot," which serves as a description of the area's overall shape. The area has seen its fair share of historic events throughout the late 1800s, including the infamous raid on the Gaskill Brothers Store in late 1875, which led the brothers to rebuild the building from stone approximately 10 years later.

Things to do in Campo, CA

The town of Campo is best known for its three museums. The Pacific Southwest Railway Museum offers rail excursions on historic trains as well as walking tours during the weekends. The Motor Transport Museum offers an exhibit of over 200 preserved and restored vehicles, while the Gaskill Brothers Stone Store offers a look back into the rough lifestyle of the pre-1900s area. The community is also a short distance away from Tecate, Mexico via the U.S.-Mexico border crossing at the California city of the same name.

As always, residents have the option of taking an hour-long drive into the greater San Diego area for many of their shopping and entertainment needs. Residents can also visit the city of El Centro, located approximately an hour east in neighboring Imperial County.

Many of the homes in the area consists of modest California bungalows and ranch-style homes, although there have been plenty of new homes built in the area in recent years. Some of these homes have seen their fair share of renovations over the past few years, from brand-new granite counter tops to all new appliances and new flooring.
