Mount Helix, commonly known as Casa de Oro-Mount Helix, is a small community located directly south of El Cajon. Bordering the communities of La Mesa, Spring Valley and Rancho San Diego, the San Diego-area community offers a quiet suburban experience for its residents. The area's mountainous terrain offers glorious views of the community and surrounding areas, making it an excellent locale for residents in search of commanding views.
The area's namesake comes from the 1872 discovery of a European snail, Helix Aspersa, along the nearby mountain peak. This discovery led to Spring Valley founder Rufus King Porter naming the peak Mt. Helix shortly afterward. The area was once known simply as Helix after the U.S. Postal Service rejected the use of two words for a post office name in 1885.
Mount Helix real estate offers some of the best views in the area, thanks in large part to the hilly terrain. Homes for sale within the area are highly valued, yet they remain affordable for most home buyers. The majority of homes in the area offer traditional California architecture, although many also feature neo-eclectic architecture. These homes run the gamut from single-story ranchers to two- and three-story single-family homes. Homebuyers can expect recently-renovated houses featuring the latest in interior decor and appliances.
The Casa de Oro-Mount Helix area features an abundance of local parks including the famous namesake, Mt. Helix Park. The area also features several excellent schools, making it attractive to families as well as individuals wanting to start families of their own.
