Hillcrest is an older neighborhood located within the city of San Diego. The neighborhood has undergone its fair share of changes since it was established during the late 1800's. Today, it is known for its active lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community, as well as its amazing array of locally owned businesses and strong cultural identity. The neighborhood is also home to UC San Diego Medical Center and Scripps Mercy Hospital.
The area was originally settled by the Kumeyaay until the era of Spanish colonization. The area became the focus of real estate development and rapid expansion throughout the 1910s and by the 1930s, it was considered a suburban shopping area for the nearby downtown area. Beginning in the 1970s, the neighborhood saw an influx of gay and lesbian residents, leading the area to become a thriving go-to spot for the LGBT community.
The Hillcrest neighborhood features a healthy mixture of single-family homes and condominiums. Many of the homes for sale in this area were built in a variety of architectural styles, ranging from the typical Craftsman and California bungalow to more modern neo-eclectic and Spanish colonial styles. The vast majority of these homes are well-maintained and some have even seen extensive renovation during the past few years. It is not uncommon to see these homes equipped with modern, energy efficient appliances, granite counter tops and exquisite wood flooring or brand-new carpeting. These homes maintain their value quite well. Nevertheless, homeowners in search of affordable real estate will be able to find exactly what they're looking for.
